Drake Brezina convicted of texting after Iowa City crash that killed Kristi Pearson

A man who was texting during a fatal car crash in Iowa City last August received a suspended sentence Monday.

Drake Brezina, 25, received a 15-year suspended sentence with five years of probation and community service. A suspended sentence means he won’t go to prison unless he commits another crime.

The judge said the decision was not an easy one to make because Iowa law requires sentencing to be based on the defendant’s rehabilitation needs and the protection of the community.

The 30-year-old victim, Kristina “Kristi” Pearson, was killed after Brezina ran a red light while talking on the phone. Pearson’s partner, Chris Brown, was seriously injured in the accident.

Brezina was charged with negligent homicide and grievous bodily harm.

Statements from people who know Brezina say that he is a teacher, coach and kind person who feels remorse for his actions.

Brezina tearfully apologized in court on Monday and said he would live his life every day to honor Pearson.

Pearson’s family did not accept the apology. Her parents told her life story in their victim statements, saying she was a talented artist, a loyal friend and a beacon of light to everyone she met.

“I can’t forgive Drake Brezina. He knew exactly what he was doing,” said Pearson’s mother, Judi Collora. “How would you feel if that was your child? How many more people have to die before they stop texting instead of driving?”

The judge said Brezina would spend time educating the public about the dangers of using a cell phone while driving.
