Deer hunting takes place at the National Conservation Training Center

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting applications for deer hunting on the 532-acre National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown.

To control the deer population on the property, the use of archery equipment, single-bullet shotguns, and muzzle-loading rifles is permitted during the applicable West Virginia hunting season.

Among the hunters who register for a specific date, hunters are randomly selected and assigned to a specific hunting location.

Hunters can apply for multiple dates.

The hunting dates are Saturday, October 12th, November 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and December 7th, 14th, 21st.

During this time, hunters may use shotguns, muzzleloaders, or bows and arrows (during the applicable West Virginia DNR hunting season) and may harvest both bucks and does (also during the applicable state hunting season) – subject to the NCTC’s “antlers first” policy.

This managed hunt is open to applicants from out of state as well as West Virginia residents.

Before the first day of hunting, the hunter must have a valid West Virginia hunting license and have received a certificate of hunter safety training.

Hunters with disabilities are welcome to participate. If necessary, appropriate accommodations will be made.

Non-toxic, lead-free ammunition must be used. Both crossbows and regular bows are permitted for bow hunting.

Hunters interested in participating should visit https://www.fws.gov/nctc/visit-us/activities/hunting.

Inquiries may be emailed to [email protected]/.

Registrations for the hunt must be received by Saturday, August 31st.
