Chicago protests against DNC: Workers erect new fence around United Center after breach during protest at Democratic National Convention

CHICAGO (WLS) — Even after a fence in front of the United Center was breached on Monday, security at the Democratic Party Convention remains a top priority.

Just as delegates arrived here at the United Center on Monday, some protesters broke through the outer security fence.

On Tuesday morning, workers appeared to be erecting additional fencing where the area had been breached, and a second line of fencing was being erected behind the original barriers.

The video shows entire sections of interlocking iron fences being torn down and, in some cases, dragged away by protesters.

Thousands marched from Union Park to demand action on a range of issues, including the war between Israel and Hamas, poverty and reproductive rights. The protest was largely peaceful.

Minutes after protesters broke through the fence on Washington Boulevard, Chicago police pulled out their riot gear and stormed the agitated scene.

Secret Service agents stopped the delegate buses to UC and Superintendent Larry Snelling rushed to the scene to assist his officers.

“I don’t want to link everything that happened (the breaching of the fence) to the entire march, because there were people who exercised their right to free speech, committed no crimes and marched away from here,” said Superintendent Snelling.

At least four people were arrested.

After the fence was repaired, more riot police cleared the adjacent Park 578 of protesters.

The police chief later recalled dozens of these officers when a clash broke out with peaceful protesters from the Poor People’s Army.

The protesters sought to request a citizen’s arrest for crimes against humanity and promised to march to the gate of the United Center, but never reached the site as police diverted them.

Chicago police said they are reviewing their security plans following Monday’s break-in and will provide an update at a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
