The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts has partnered with Mercer University to provide visualization training to Mercer University’s third- and fourth-year medical students. The Turner Center, along with arts institutes in Savannah, Macon, and Columbus, offers this innovative clinical training that uses the arts to build visual literacy, enhance clinical observation techniques, promote collaboration, and improve communication skills.

During the training, medical students study a work of art for several minutes at a time and then spend several minutes discussing what they see with other medical students. Students discover that the longer they look at a work of art, the more they see. They also discover the benefits of collaborating with others on the same work and how this can impact their decisions.

“We are very proud to partner with these medical students to explore how the arts can positively influence the way we view and serve others,” said Dr. Sementha Mathews, executive director of the Turner Center. “This innovative approach can help change the way we view not only patients, but students, staff, neighbors and family members as well. It is a testament to the power of the arts in our community and in our lives.”

The Turner Center will host the medical students twice a year, in July and January. For more information, contact Dr. Mathews at 229-247-2787 or [email protected].
