Joanna Gaines’ son Drake leaves his mother in tears as he leaves

Joanna Gaines clings to her son Drake as she says goodbye and tells the others: “It doesn’t get any easier.”

For Drake, it’s his second year of college, and many parents feel the same way. Some are even sending their child to kindergarten for the first time. For me, it’s the first time sending my middle child to college. Although I knew what to expect after sending my first child to college, I know how Joanna feels – man, it’s so hard to let go!

Joanna Gaines says goodbye to son Drake, who is going back to college

The beloved designer and mother of five recently shared an emotional moment that resonated with parents everywhere. As her eldest son, Drake, headed back to college, Joanna opened up about the heartbreaking reality of watching him grow up and the bittersweet experience of saying goodbye.

In an emotional post, Joanna expressed what so many parents feel but often struggle to put into words. The transition from seeing your child every day to just watching their life from afar is anything but easy. No matter how many times you go through it, it doesn’t seem to get any easier.

Joanna wrote, “Second year of college…saying goodbye doesn’t get any easier. Lots of love to all the parents sending their kids off to school this year,” and I don’t know about you, but I felt that deep in my heart.

Joanna experiences mixed feelings

Like many parents, Joanna experiences mixed emotions at this stage of life. She is proud that Drake is pursuing his dreams and excited for the adventures he is having, but she also deeply misses her previous life – with all her little ones at home. The daily routines that once included his laughter, his presence and the simple joy of being together are now moments she must enjoy from afar.

This isn’t the first time Joanna has spoken about her experiences as a mother. She has always been open about the joys and challenges of raising children. But this farewell was particularly poignant. As a mother, watching your child grow up is both a privilege and a heartbreak. It’s a journey filled with countless moments of letting go, each one a reminder of how time flies and how life is constantly changing.

Joanna’s honesty about her feelings reminds us that it’s OK to feel the weight of these changes. It’s OK to cry, to miss them, and to wish they were still home, even as you cheer them on from afar. Parenting is a delicate balance between holding on and letting go, and each goodbye is a testament to the love that makes these moments so hard.

Joanna is Drake’s biggest supporter

As Drake settles into his college life, Joanna will no doubt continue to be his greatest support, offering encouragement and love from home. And while saying goodbye will never get easier, it is a beautiful expression of the deep bond they share – a bond that will never fade despite distance and time.

It is in moments like these that we are reminded of the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To everything there is a season, and a time for every activity under heaven.” Joanna and Drake are entering a new season that will bring new challenges and joys, but through it all, a mother’s love remains a constant, unwavering force.
