Summer is a great time to get creative with your hair. From beach waves to braids to buttery soft hair colors, it’s the season of effortless and carefree looks. Fall, on the other hand, is all about keeping it sleek and chic, and this year’s top hair color trends tap into that energy. Although there are many shades to choose from, rich chocolate hair is one of the most popular. As the name suggests, this look is luxurious and extremely versatile. “Rich chocolate brown is a timeless color that offers warmth and depth,” says Chase Kusero, co-founder of IGK Hair Care.

Brunette shades have been a big trend lately. This summer, honey brown looks and variations of golden brunette took center stage. Now that fall is upon us, rich chocolate brown is the new shade to covet. Celebrity hairstylists and color experts explain how to get the look.

What is rich chocolate hair?

There’s only one word to describe this shade, and that’s luxurious. Rich in tones, texture, and finish, this take on brown hair is meant to exude opulence and glamour. “Rich chocolate brown is a deep brown shade with a glossy and vibrant look,” says Min Kim, celebrity colorist and balayage specialist. The expert mentions that it contains various warm undertones that add depth and dimension to the color. “This shade is all about making hair look healthy and full of life,” she says.

Who is rich chocolate brown suitable for?

Many browns are universal enough to work with a range of skin tones, and this shade is no exception. Kusero explains that dark brown hair is often associated with warmer undertones, while rich chocolate brown can be adapted to cool undertones. Simply put, it’s for everyone. The shade’s natural tones also allow it to work for almost any hair type. “This hair color enhances the shine of your natural hair while adding fullness,” says Kim.

What you should ask for in the salon

Achieving this luxurious shade is much easier than some of the season’s other trending colors. For those unsure about whether they want permanent coloring, Kim points out that semi-permanent color can be an option, depending on how intense you want the shade to be. Regardless of the type of color, she recommends asking your hairdresser for a rich, deep brown shade with warm undertones.

If you’re looking to swap your summer brown for a rich chocolate brown, Kusero says a color mask in a dark brown shade can help. “Color masks allow you to transition from a lighter brown to a darker shade,” he says. The pro recommends a conditioning formula like IGK Color Depositing Mask in Brown Bella ($29), which conditions hair and adds shine.

How to care for rich chocolate hair

Although rich chocolate brown isn’t as difficult to maintain as blonde or red hair, it does require some work to maintain the look. Luckily, the adjustments are simple and easy to do at home. Color-preserving products are the essential step you shouldn’t skip in your hair-washing routine. “Using a color-safe shampoo and conditioner will extend the life of your color while preserving its color intensity,” says Kim. After washing your hair, she recommends applying a leave-in spray to condition your hair and protect it from hot styling tools. “Look for a multi-purpose spray like L’Oreal Professionnel’s Vitamino Color 10-In-1 Perfecting Spray ($35), which smoothes hair and enhances shine,” she says. Finally, both experts point out that regular shine treatments will help keep your hair vibrant and give it a mirror-like shine.
