There is a lot of excitement among Patriots fans because the question of the starting quarterback is currently more unclear than it was at the beginning of training camp.
Head coach Jerod Mayo reversed his earlier opinion of Jacoby Brissett as starting quarterback as Drake Maye’s reputation rose. The rookie impressed in New England’s second preseason game and has since gotten more playing time with the top team.
It’s unclear what the odds are for Maye, as New England would reportedly prefer to use a veteran early in the regular season. However, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport noted Monday that the Patriots have “very high” expectations for Maye and aren’t entirely confident about the idea of an open competition.
“I would say it could go in a different direction,” Rapoport said. “We’ll see which way it goes, but the fact that the early results are so positive, I think, is pretty good for New England.”

The Patriots have a tough schedule to start the season, so they may be hesitant to put a rookie on the field, especially in front of an offensive line with many question marks. Questions surrounding the starting quarterback job could be answered this Sunday when New England faces the Washington Commanders in the final preseason game.
