Region of Waterloo receives AHS funding

KITCHENER, ONT. — Canada’s federal government has announced it will provide $96 million in grants and low-interest loans through the Affordable Housing Fund to build and renovate 7,685 affordable homes in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and neighboring Ontario communities.

The announcement was made at 82 Wilson Avenue in Kitchener, an affordable housing project that received $2.4 million to build 48 apartments and is operated by the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, a news release said. The building is energy efficient and universally designed, providing housing for low-income households on the region’s social housing waiting list.

The funding will help create a total of 336 new homes and repair 7,349 homes. The Affordable Housing Fund provides funds in the form of low-interest or forgiven loans or contributions to support the construction of new affordable homes and the renovation and repair of existing affordable and community housing.

Major projects include: 82 Wilson Avenue, Kitchener, $2.4 million; ShelterCare, Waterloo, $2.4 million; Region of Waterloo Portfolio repairs, $12 million; St. Mark’s Place, Kitchener, $2.1 million; Guelph Non-Profit Housing Corporation repairs, $5.4 million; County of Wellington repairs, $12 million; City of Brantford housing stock repairs, $6 million; County of Oxford repairs, Woodstock, $3.2 million; County of Norfolk repairs, $2.3 million; Perth and Stratford Housing Corporation repairs, Stratford, $2.5 million; Grey County repairs, Owen Sound, $3.5 million; Odawa Heights Apartment, Owen Sound, $2.8 million.
