Sonos will not be able to re-release its old app to satisfy customers who were unhappy with the new version of the app, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence said today on Reddit (via The Verge).

Sonos redesigned app
Spence said he was “hopeful” that the old app could be re-released as an alternative for people having problems until “recently,” but Sonos noted that this would ultimately make the problems worse due to backend updates to the cloud servers and the software running on the speakers.

Everything was on the table to find the fastest way to fix your systems. In fact, until recently I was hoping we could re-release the old app (S2) as an alternative for those of you who have issues we haven’t yet resolved.

The trick, of course, is that Sonos isn’t just the mobile app, it’s also software that runs on your speakers and in the cloud. In the months since we launched the new mobile app, we’ve updated the software that runs on our speakers and in the cloud to the point where S2 is less reliable and less stable today than what you remember. After extensive testing, we reluctantly concluded that re-releasing S2 would make the problems worse, not better. I’m sure that’s disappointing. For me, it was disappointing.

Beginning of the month The edge reported that Sonos was considering bringing back the original version of its app, and Sonos reportedly hoped that allowing customers to revert to the old app would be a stopgap measure while the company worked on improving the new app. It sounds like that plan has been scrapped, which is unfortunate for customers who are having issues with the redesign.

Sonos released a redesigned version of its app in May that turned out to be a disaster for the company. Sonos customers quickly discovered that the new app was missing several key features and riddled with bugs, and there were persistent complaints for months.

Sonos apologized in July and outlined future update plans to bring back missing features in September and October. In August, Sonos said it would postpone two product launches planned for 2024 to focus on improving the app.

In his Reddit post today, Spence said that the “original architect of the Sonos platform” has taken over again and that the company has also “brought together the best and most experienced engineers” to work on the app until the problem is fixed.
