Preview: Broner vs. Garcia

Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) is one of the sport’s biggest stars. He is one of 16 boxers to win four division titles, but his last two fights have been one-fights. “The Problem” struggled on the scales, missing weight to Ashley Theophane and being stripped of his WBA super lightweight title, although he ultimately won by ninth-round TKO.

His next fight against Adrian Granados was at a weight cut from 142 pounds to 147 pounds. He won by a controversial split decision, but many boxing experts felt that Granados lost out.

Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is a rising star in the sport, but like his opponent, he has taken an unusual path to get to this point. After defeating Juan Carlos Burgos in January 2014, Garcia sat out two and a half years in a lengthy legal battle with his former promoter Top Rank.

With a new promoter and a new purpose in life, Garcia has won both of his fights, including in January when he captured the WBC lightweight title by knocking out Dejan Zlatičanin.

It is one of the biggest fights of 2017. One fighter will rise while the other will fail.

Here’s what you need to know about Broner vs. Garcia.

Editor’s Note: In the portion of the article introducing the fight, we stated that Garcia spent over a million dollars in legal fees to obtain his freedom from Top Rank. Garcia’s legal counsel in the fight against Top Rank, Bryan Freedman of Los Angeles-based Freedman & Taitelman, LLP, emailed Sporting News that this was not the case and our research was incorrect.

“Mikey (Garcia) did not pay a dollar to Top Rank to settle the case and gain his freedom,” Freedman said in the email. “They released him from the contract because court rulings would have been unfavorable and potentially impacted all Top Rank fighters. While the litigation did cost Mikey some money, it was nowhere near a million dollars, and in the opinion of Mikey and his lead trial attorney, it was well worth it to prove to all fighters that there is a way around what they believe are illegal and unenforceable contracts with abusive promoters.”
