Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic Senate candidate for Maryland and longtime friend of Kamala Harris, had convention delegates chanting “We are not going back” after delivering a rousing speech about her record as a prosecutor and her 14-year relationship.

“I have always been inspired by women like my grandmother, women who envision a better future and then have the courage to make it a reality,” Alsobrooks said. “One of them is a friend, a mentor and a role model. That woman is Kamala Harris. Let me tell you about the Kamala I know.”

Alsobrooks met Harris after she adopted some of the San Francisco District Attorney’s then-policy approaches to crime. At the time, in 2009, Alsobrooks was also looking for a job as a district attorney in Maryland. She praised Harris as a “super-bad district attorney” who could hold violent criminals accountable while also pursuing programs to combat recidivism.

“Crime went down and economic growth went up,” Alsobrooks said. “Kamala Harris knows how to keep criminals off the streets. In November, with your help, she will keep one from getting into the Oval Office.”

Alsobrooks is running against former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, one of Trump’s most prominent Republican critics. If she wins, she would be the first black senator to represent Maryland and one of the few black women in the Senate. (California Sen. Laphonza Butler is not seeking re-election this year, and Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester is also running for a Senate seat in Delaware.)

Harris herself became the second black woman ever elected to the Senate in 2016.
