All Carmel businesses close, funds are diverted to police, fire department and roads

CARMEL – A specialty store in Carmel announced its closure on Tuesday.

All Things Carmel sold gifts, clothing and accessories and was located in the Carmel Arts and Design District.

The store was operated by Promote Carmel, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 2020 by former Mayor Jim Brainard.

According to a press release, the venture was supported with tax money from the city’s general fund.

According to the city, a recent audit found that an additional $100,000 is needed to meet Brainard’s administration’s obligations, in addition to the $200,000 already budgeted.

The city has decided to close the store and allocate the funds to police, fire and road maintenance.

“Inflation and the higher cost of living have forced Carmel taxpayers to tighten their belts. It is my responsibility to do the same with our city budget,” said Mayor Sue Finkam. “While the program has been a vibrant asset to the Carmel Arts & Design District, today’s fiscal climate requires that we prioritize important expenses such as police and fire personnel and street maintenance.”

Employees were informed of the decision on Tuesday, August 20.

“This deal was a labor of love for many people,” said Tim Griffin, Chairman of the Board of Promote Carmel, Inc. “The management of Promote Carmel, Inc. and the City of Carmel thank them for their support.”

After an inventory, the city announced that the products from the stores would either be donated or sold online.
