The 5 cheapest car brands in maintenance and repair in 2024

The car buying platform Car Edge has identified the vehicle manufacturers whose models are the cheapest to maintain over a period of five years.

While labor and parts costs are rising for all drivers, considering how much they pay to keep a model running before purchasing their next car can save them thousands.

According to the study, Toyota is the brand with the cheapest maintenance costs: drivers pay an average of £1,367 (€1,417) for a five-year contract.

The Japanese brand is known for its reliability and uses high-quality materials and components to ensure a long service life.

The company’s study is not the only time Toyota has been rated highly for reliability. In a reliability study conducted by WhatCar?, the company came second, with only the company’s luxury sub-brand Lexus doing better.

However, drivers don’t have to have a lot of money to own a car that’s cheap to maintain: Fiat ranks second in Car Edge’s report.

According to the company, Fiat owners typically pay £1,545 for servicing in the first five years of their vehicle’s operation.

One of the main reasons for the low running costs of the Italian brand’s cars is that they are often smaller and cheaper and often have simple mechanics and less advanced technology that can break down.

Finally, Car Edge pointed out that Mitsubishi also produces a range of vehicles that are incredibly cheap to maintain: drivers typically pay £1,573 over a five-year period to keep the vehicle running.

Although they are not one of the most successful car brands for British motorists, and sales end in 2021, their range of rugged pickup trucks and SUVs has earned a solid reputation for build quality, making it unlikely that any parts will break.

According to WhatCar?, the brand was voted the fifth most reliable, with only six percent of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV owners reporting problems.
