5 things you need to know

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Good morning and happy Wednesday! More schools are starting again today. If you are one of them, we hope you have a great day! In the meantime, you should know these five stories we are following.

1. The U.S. Coast Guard is facing cuts that could impact central Michigan. Cuts to the Essexville station could mean other stations, such as Tawas and Detroit, will be needed for rescue operations in Saginaw Bay. The Saginaw River station is currently staffed only 40 hours per week. The U.S. Coast Guard said the adjustments are temporary.

2. Artificial intelligence is being introduced into Saginaw County’s central dispatch center to help with non-urgent calls. The dispatch center said the AI program will go live next Tuesday. It will allow dispatchers to focus on urgent calls, improving response times and quality of service. The non-urgent line can be reached at 989-797-4580.

3. A local nurse has filed unfair labor practice lawsuits against Ascension Genesys in Grand Blanc Township and a local union. Madrina Wells claimed the hospital and Teamsters Local 332 deducted union dues from her pay without her consent. She and her co-worker filed additional unfair labor practice lawsuits against the union last month. She said union bosses threatened to fire both of them if they did not allow dues to be deducted from their paychecks. We reached out to the union for comment but did not receive a response.

4. Midland wants your input on the pedestrian plaza. The plaza is a two-block car-free area on Main Street for shopping, dining and summer events. The Midland City Council has granted a multi-year permit to resurface the plaza annually from early June to late September through 2025. The city is conducting a survey to find out what should happen after 2025. Here is the link.

August 5 is National Golf Month!
