Former Atlanta Falcons and Ohio State wide receiver signs with Canadian Football League team

When the Atlanta Falcons began training camp on July 25 in Flowery Branch, Georgia, receiver Austin Mack was working with the first and second offensive lines and appeared ready to compete for a spot on the team’s 53-man roster.

But less than a month later, Mack is back where he made his name on the NFL map – with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Mack signed a contract with the Alouettes for the remainder of the 2024 season and arrived in Montreal on Monday before attending team meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to The Gazette.

Mack, 26, fell down Atlanta’s rankings during training camp, and in the Falcons’ 20-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins in their first preseason game, he failed to catch a pass and was only targeted once.

The Falcons initially signed Mack to a reserve/futures contract in January, sparked by his strong 2023 season with the Alouettes – the Fort Wayne, Indiana native was a CFL All-Star after catching 78 passes for 1,154 yards and four touchdowns.

In 202, he played for the New York Giants, played 11 games and caught seven passes for 91 yards.

Mack, who played at Ohio State University from 2016 to 2019 before going undrafted in 2020, stood out on Atlanta’s staff with his performance and performance in the CFL.

“We work through that stuff all year long, looking at stats, looking at the leaders in those leagues,” Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith said on July 28. “We’ll evaluate the video once the season is over. And of course, the other leagues have rules about when you can and can’t recruit players.”

“He was great and was one of the guys we marked and watched and liked. We took him to practice and liked what he did. We remembered him from when he played at Ohio State. So it all just kind of worked out for us.”

But ultimately, despite receiver Rondale Moore’s injury, it wasn’t enough for Atlanta to keep Mack. Now, life for both parties is back to how it was before January – without the other.
