Wayne Rooney will play for Man Utd again despite a mixed start as Plymouth head coach

Wayne Rooney will play for Manchester United again – even though he is the manager of Plymouth!

The 38-year-old became a legend during his playing time at Old Trafford and spent 13 years at the club between 2004 and 2017.

Rooney won everything with United, including five Premier League titles, before being sacked by Jose Mourinho seven years ago.

Since his appointment earlier this summer, he is currently manager of Championship side Plymouth.

But now Rooney is likely to play for United again.

The former England captain will represent Manchester United’s Legends team against Celtic on September 7.

His last game for United ended in victory: the fallen giants beat Ajax 2-0 to win the Europa League in 2017.

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, who were signed from Borussia Dortmund and Juventus Turin respectively last year, helped them to triumph.

United have also confirmed that a number of other legends will be on the field when they face Celtic.

One of the heroes is Paul Scholes, who will wear the club’s legendary red and white colours again after retiring from football in 2013.

Nicky Butt, Dimitar Berbatov, Antonio Valencia, Darren Fletcher, Anders Lindegaard and Wes Brown have also been confirmed to take part in the game.

Lindegaard recently said he was “very excited.”

“I’m very happy about it,” said the Dane, who often struggled for playing time during his time at Old Trafford.

“It is a great honour for me and everyone else taking part in these Games and I am very happy to be back.

“Once you’ve played for Manchester United, you always miss it a little bit. So to feel part of the club again – even if it’s just for a day – is something special.”
