Ohio Senator Brown skips DNC to secure support from Lucas and Wood County Sheriffs

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown explains his decision to skip the Democratic National Convention to campaign across Ohio instead.

On Wednesday, he stopped in Toledo to campaign for support from Republican Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and Democratic Lucas County Sheriff Mike Navarre.

This convention is the first one Brown has missed since joining Congress. He said he and his wife usually only attend for a day or two, but decided four months ago to skip this year’s events in Chicago.

“When it comes to pure politics, there are a lot more voters in Toledo, Ohio, than in Chicago,” Brown said. “But it’s also the case – I’m doing my job. My job is to continue to serve the people. Elections take care of themselves if you do your job the way you’re supposed to.”

Brown is trying to fend off Republican businessman Bernie Moreno in November. His campaign’s communications director, Reagan McCarthy, reacted to Brown’s decision to avoid the convention: “Sherrod Brown is almost 100% aligned with the Biden-Harris administration. Even if he avoids the convention, he can’t hide from the most radical presidential candidate in history.”
