Newsom evades question about Harris’ price controls: “She has not disclosed the details”

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-California) declined to comment directly on whether he supports Vice President Kamala Harris’s recent proposal to control prices in the food industry, which her campaign team described as the first ban on “price gouging.”

“We haven’t seen the details yet. She hasn’t announced the details,” the California governor and star Democratic candidate told Fox News Digital when asked if he supported Harris’ economic plan, particularly the price-fixing aspect.

Newsom did not answer the question on the first two attempts, and at one point the governor’s security guard violently slapped Fox News Digital’s microphone away.

“If I have the opportunity to look at those details – and if they go in the direction of what Elizabeth Warren has done, then I think they are meritorious and interesting,” he continued in his response on Tuesday at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) has introduced a bill to crack down on what she calls “price gouging” by companies. The Price Gouging Prevention Act of 2024 would give the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general the authority to “enforce a federal prohibition against grossly excessive price increases, regardless of a seller’s position in a supply chain.”

The progressive senator’s bill was introduced jointly with vulnerable Democratic senators Bob Casey (D-Penn.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin). Both are seeking re-election in November in swing states where Harris’ and her own policies do not always enjoy broad support.

According to Newsom, “I follow price gouging in California as it relates to oil companies – as it relates to the pharmaceutical industry.”

“I welcome it in that direction,” he said of Harris’ proposal. “But I haven’t had a chance to look into the details yet.”

Newsom also told Fox News Digital on Monday that he was “very aware” of Harris’ broader economic proposal.

“Child tax credits. Newborn tax credits. Focus on earned income tax credits. We don’t think these programs work – we know they work,” he said in response to their introduction, which included a dramatic expansion of the child tax credit to up to $6,000 in the first year of a child’s life, as well as an extension of prescription drug price caps to everyone, not just retirees.

In addition, a $40 billion fund will be set up to help local governments build additional housing units. There are also plans to take tougher action against landlords.
