A horse in Wayne County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE), just days after a similar case was reported in Cayuga County. EEE, a rare but serious disease, is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can cause brain inflammation in humans and animals.
The Wayne County Health Department urges residents to take precautions, including using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito season between dusk and dawn.
Since there is no vaccine for humans, prevention of mosquito bites remains the best defense against EEE. Horse owners are advised to consult their veterinarian about available vaccines for EEE and West Nile virus.
