Judge rejects former Bama basketball player’s bail request for the third time

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WBRC) – A Tuscaloosa County District Judge Bail denied for former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles for the third time. Miles and suspect Michael Davis both face capital crime charges in connection with the Death of mother Jamea Harris by shooting in Tuscaloosa in January 2023.

The trial in Tuscaloosa County Court consisted of three parts: The defense filed motions to suppress murder suspect Darius Miles’ statements during police questioning. These were denied. The other motion sought to allow Darius Miles to post bail. This motion was also denied for the third time. The defense also filed a last-minute motion less than two hours before the hearing was set to begin Wednesday morning.

“The motion to strike that they’re talking about is something that the defense filed this morning that related to the testimony at the beginning of that suppression hearing two months ago. So they filed a motion to strike some of that testimony. The judge has considered that and will make a decision on that later,” said Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Hays Webb.

Darius Miles remains in custody for the time being.

Investigators say Davis pulled the trigger but used Miles’ legally purchased gun. Both were charged two months after the shooting.

Mary Turner, Darius Miles’ attorney, argued self-defense, claiming that Jamea Harris’ boyfriend started the altercation and that Davis used Miles’ gun to protect himself.

After the hearing, Jamea Harris’ mother made it clear that she viewed the denial of bail as a big step forward.

“Another small victory,” said Carla Heard.

Miles’ family declined an interview.

And with that, Darius Miles was returned to where he had spent the last year and a half: the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

District Attorney Webb no longer expects further hearings and the case could The trial will begin in 2025. We bolded the word “could” because the judge mentioned that he has two other capital cases on his docket before this one.
