Justin Fields has put up a tough fight in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback competition so far this year. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star quarterback has made things a lot more interesting than many expected.
While Russell Wilson is still expected to get the job, Fields has proven that he could well be the long-term option for the Steelers’ quarterback position.
Apart from this, ESPN has released their predictions for every player in the NFL. With Fields, they obviously don’t expect him to be a starter, but they do expect him to play a role.
Fields would appear in 17 games and complete 77 of his 124 passes for 849 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, as well as rush for 216 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Such a season would not be a disappointment for Fields.
Of course, he would prefer to get more playing time and put up higher numbers, but this would be a decent season as a backup player. At least he would have a consistent role and could get some playing experience.
There is still a very good chance that he will actually end up playing a lot more.
If Wilson struggles, head coach Mike Tomlin likely wouldn’t hesitate to give his young quarterback a chance. If Wilson gets injured, Fields would be the next man up.
At just 25 years old, the former Ohio State star still has plenty of time to get things right. He’s faced some very harsh criticism since entering the NFL, but he’s looking much better in Pittsburgh.
Still, it will be interesting to see what happens with Fields in the 2024 season. He has made things interesting for the Steelers and shown that he can have a long future with the franchise.
Hopefully he will be able to showcase his talent on the field from time to time throughout the year.
