The announcement of Joey Votto’s retirement sparked reactions from John Sadak, Chris Welsh and Jim Day during Bally Sports Ohio’s broadcast of the Cincinnati Reds’ series finale against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

“Certainly one of the most extraordinary players, perhaps the most extraordinary player I’ve ever covered,” Day said during the broadcast. “And it’s been a pleasure all these years. Joey Votto, from the Reds fans, thank you. … Joey Votto, a fabulous career is over.”

“All the best to Joey, the Reds are here in Toronto,” Sadak added. “In a way, it feels like we’ve come full circle. And this man provided many of the shining moments and for a generation of Reds fans, he was the face of the franchise.”

“And he was also a Reds type of player,” said Welsh. “Because in my eyes, Joey Votto was a self-made man. Through hard work, he became a major league hitter and one of the best of all time.”

“In his last game here (in Toronto) as a Red, which was a couple of years ago in the finale of this series when he returned to his home country,” Sadak said later on the show. “He hit the game-winning home run. In fact, he hadn’t hit a home run in the first 24 games this year. And in the 8th inning, he hit that one to break a 2-2 tie that led to a 3-2 Reds victory. That’s his last moment in Toronto.”
