Lee County residents on welfare may be eligible for free garbage collection

LEE COUNTY, Alabama (WTVM) – Lee County residents on fixed incomes have a new benefit that can help them save money.

If Social Security is your only source of income, you may be eligible for a waiver of the annual curbside garbage collection fee.

“No, I didn’t know that,” said Janessa McDonald.

McDonald is one of many Lee County residents who now pay for curbside trash pickup. In March 2022, Lee County switched from the previous method of disposing of trash at a local landfill to the current curbside pickup system.

“I don’t really care. It’s not that bad. Both are practical, it just depends on your lifestyle,” she said.

According to the Lee County website, there is an annual fee of $222 for curbside garbage collection, but some Lee County residents are eligible for free curbside pickup.

“I mean, it would obviously be nice to save them some money,” McDonald said.

To qualify for the garbage collection exemption, residents must derive their income solely from Social Security. Eligible residents must complete an application and submit it to the Lee County Health Department.

McDonald believes more people should know about this exemption.

“Like I said, it’s about saving money, and they’re on a fixed income. I think it’s good to save money in any way you can,” she said.

Lee County emphasizes that all curb fee exemption requests must be submitted to the Lee County Health Department. not by 30 September at the Environmental Agency.
