When does Tim Walz speak? What we know about the DNC speech – NBC Chicago

Editor’s Note: NBC Chicago offers a live feed of the evening and primetime speeches every Monday through Thursday in the player above and on the 24/7 streaming channel NBC 5 Chicago News.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will headline the third day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, but when can viewers expect to hear his speech?

Walz, who was little known outside Minnesota before being chosen as Harris’ running mate, will have to face a national audience that is still getting to know him and will “introduce himself” during his acceptance speech Wednesday night.

Since Harris announced her choice, the campaign has been trying to introduce the country to the 60-year-old governor and self-proclaimed “Midwest Dad.” At the same time, Republicans are trying to undermine Walz by questioning his biography and resurfacing some of his previous imprecise language and misstatements by him or his staff.

Here’s what you should know about his address:

When does Walz speak on Wednesday?

Walz will be the last speaker on the list.

As of 20:45 the program was already behind schedule, but the organizers pointed out that in such cases some changes could be made.

The “main program” began on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and was supposed to last until 10:00 p.m. So far, however, the two evenings of the congress have lasted longer.

On Tuesday, Obama’s speech was the last of the evening, and although the gavel was scheduled for 10:15 p.m., the speech lasted beyond 10:30 p.m.

Here’s a look at the schedule for the final hour of the convention:

What will Walz talk about?

Walz has a dual task in his speech in Chicago. The governor of Minnesota, known among his supporters as a folksy Midwestern teacher, coach and father, will introduce himself to the rest of the country. He will also have to articulate the central message of the campaign and the motto of the evening: “A fight for our freedoms.”

The campaign team said Walz would speak in his prime-time address about his childhood in Nebraska, his service in the National Guard, his work as a teacher and football coach, and his time in Congress before his election as governor. Before his appearance on stage, John Legend will deliver a tribute to Prince, the campaign team said.

“He will introduce himself to the American people on the convention stage tonight, highlighting the small-town values that have shaped his life and his commitment to protecting the freedoms we all hold dear,” said DNC Director Alex Hornbrook.

Michael Tyler, communications director for the Harris-Walz campaign, declined to provide details on the ideas he is proposing for his campaign, but Walz wants to “solidify that introductory framework,” he said.

“He’s been on the campaign trail for about two weeks since the Vice President announced him as her running mate, and they’re obviously busy traveling crisscrossing the country and visiting all the swing states,” Tyler said. “You’ve seen the excitement of the crowds in places like Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Detroit, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and of course last night in Milwaukee… he’s only been on the campaign trail for two weeks. And so the vast majority of Americans, a broader spectrum of the electorate, will have an opportunity to fully understand and get to know Governor Walz, right? As someone who’s been a school teacher, a football coach, and then of course a congressman and governor for some time, the common thread will be that Governor Walz has always been someone who has fought for the weak, who has fought for the needy, who has fought for the good of the people he represents. And so tonight in prime time, the American people will have an opportunity to see that, many for the very first time.”

Who else will speak on the third day of the congress?

The full speaker list and schedule for Day 3 have not yet been released, but in addition to keynote speeches from former President Bill Clinton and Walz, the third night of the convention will feature some of the party’s biggest names and likely future leaders.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York will deliver speeches, as will high-profile senators: Cory Booker of New Jersey, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Chris Murphy of Connecticut.

Also speaking at the convention will be Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who was a finalist for Harris’ running mate. Both are considered rising forces in Democratic politics.

The list again includes several Republican speakers, including former President Donald Trump’s White House aide Olivia Troye, a former national security official, and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan.

To highlight the theme of the evening, the fight for freedom, Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of the non-profit organization “Reproductive Freedom for All,” will give a speech.

As for the focus of some of the key speeches, DNC Director Alex Hornbrook said Clinton wanted to “underscore the importance of this moment and this election, not just for our party, but for the future of our country.”
