Twitch subscriptions are increasing in price again, but only on mobile devices

Twitch raised subscription prices by $1 to $2 in over 30 countries about two months ago. This week, the streaming company announced a new wave of price increases that will affect Twitch users in 40 countries.

Starting October 1, Twitch will increase prices for new Tier 1 subscriptions and gift subscriptions in the mobile app, the company announced on Twitter. The price increase is likely Twitch’s response to the fees Apple and Google are charging for in-app purchases.

Until now, these fees were covered by Amazon, but that will change starting October 1. Twitch announced that it will notify streamers and subscribers in countries where prices for the mobile app are increasing.

To keep pace with rising costs and local currency fluctuations, we’re updating pricing for Tier 1 and Gift Subscriptions on the Twitch mobile apps for iOS and Android in over 40 countries.”, Twitch explains in an email to streamers.

Basically, this means you should never subscribe to a Twitch streamer on the mobile app because you’ll pay more. Subscription prices for the desktop app haven’t changed since the last price increase, so you’ll still pay $6 per month if you live in the US. For comparison, the same Tier 1 subscription costs $8 in the US.

According to Twitch, streamers will continue to receive the same net revenue share for subscriptions and gift subscriptions, so this price increase means they will receive more per subscription.

It is also important to note that Twitch will not notify subscribers of the price change until October, and their subscriptions will renew at the new price starting November 1st.

The good news is that Tier 2 and 3 prices are not affected by the price increase, so from the beginning of October only the new Tier 1 subscriptions will be more expensive.
