Rooney joined the Pilgrims as manager this summer but has not had a particularly good start in the Championship.

His team suffered a 4-0 defeat on the opening day, but went on to beat Cheltenham in the Carabao Cup and then draw with Hull.

Plymouth’s players may be able to learn a thing or two in training from Rooney, who scored 364 goals for club and country during his illustrious career.

The 38-year-old took part in an open training session in Plymouth on Tuesday and produced some wonderful passes that showed he still has incredible ball control and vision. After all, class is permanent.

Rooney probably didn’t get too involved in the matter because he had bad experiences in the past.

When he was Derby manager in 2021, he accidentally injured Jason Knight during training, resulting in him being out for three months.

He said of the incident in The Overlap: “I had to pull someone out of the 11-on-11 and I got involved. When the ball came, Knighty (Jason Knight) and I went to tackle him and I threw him out.

“It was just a blocking tackle, but he sprained his ankle and was out of action for eight weeks.”

Plymouth’s next match is against QPR in the Championship and Rooney is encouraged by how his team have recovered from their opening day defeat.

After the draw against Hull he said: “I think the boys gave it their all today, that was the most pleasing thing.

“I think they showed commitment and energy after last week – they wanted to win.

“We tried to win the game, had much better chances, but unfortunately it didn’t work out.

“We will work a bit more on our finishing on the training pitch and try to improve it.”

Simon Jordan wants Wayne Rooney to succeed at Plymouth Argyle after their poor start to the Championship against Sheffield Wednesday.
