Christina Aguilera makes “Skunk Hair” cool again

The “skunk hair” trend is definitely a polarizing one. If you’re not familiar with the hair color trend, the name gives it away: It’s a striking contrast between light and dark sections of hair that’s reminiscent of the bold coloring of its animal namesake. The bold look was a popular, edgy hairstyle in the early 2000s, and now it seems to be making a comeback thanks to Y2K icons like Christina Aguilera. The 43-year-old singer recently took to Instagram to show off a subtle, modern take on the “skunk hair” trend – and it’s giving us some real early 2000s déjà vu.

In the photos, the “Lady Marmalade” singer’s hair is slicked back into two high ponytails, with additional sections twisted into textured spiral shapes that come together to create a futuristic updo. True to the skunk trend, her blonde hair is streaked with thin, dark strands throughout. The result is a revitalized version of the 2000 “skunk hair” trend, but in a more sophisticated, less dramatic way than she rocked back then. Unsurprisingly, fans have flocked to the comments section to say she’s “aging backwards” and that she looks like she’s back in her 20s.

Christina Aguilera: Modern “Skunk Hair”

Aguilera rocked the duo-tone trend “Skunk Hair” in 2002, around the release of her legendary album Moved out and his first single “Dirrty”. This marked a rebellious time for the star. “I came out with ‘Dirrty’ and that was my shit moment,” she said The Irish period in 2019. “It was me standing up and saying that I was a woman who was proud of my sexuality. I was proud of my vulnerability. I was proud of fighting my way through this industry.”

Skunk hair isn’t the only early 2000s trend making a stylish comeback—Y2K side bangs are also back in style. Celebrities like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Selena Gomez, and Ariana Grande have all been spotted sporting the nostalgic look, and we suspect it’s headed for a full-blown comeback. Pinterest thinks so too, according to its highly anticipated fall trend report.

So if you’re itching to head to the salon for some new bangs or even a two-tone hairstyle à la Aguilera, you’re definitely not alone. The 2000s are calling and they’ve never looked more modern.
