Proposal to introduce price determination for US flake graphite

Fastmarkets’ proposal follows initial feedback from market participants interested in a price reference for the natural graphite flakes used in the electric vehicle (EV) battery anode supply chain for the US region.

The U.S. Trade Representative recently postponed his final decision on Section 301 tariffs on Chinese imports, including graphite, after some major U.S. automakers called for a reduction in tariffs or at least a delay until domestic supply chains are better established.

This new US graphite flake price complements an existing set of price assessments for natural and synthetic graphite available in Europe and Asia.

The proposed specifications are as follows:

Graphite flakes 94% C, -100 mesh, cif US ports, $/ton
Quality: Flake 94% C, -100 Mesh
Quantity: At least 20 tons
Location: CIF U.S. ports, excluding Pacific states (Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska and Hawaii) as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. FCL.
Unit: US$ per tonne
Publication frequency: Monthly, first Thursday of every month, 10-11 a.m. Eastern Time.
The consultation period for this proposed launch will begin on Thursday 22 August and end on Thursday 19 September. The launch will take place on Thursday 3 October 2024, subject to market feedback.
