According to a press release from the City of Calgary, “major work is scheduled to begin Monday” on 33 Avenue Northwest. This construction work will involve three steps: site preparation, sawing and excavation.

Excavation, which begins on August 27, will involve removing sections of road and material below ground to expose the main line and relieve pressure.

“Later next week, repairs to the main feeder line in Shouldice Park will also begin. The work in Shouldice Park will not impact traffic on 16 Avenue NW. However, there may be temporary disruptions on Montserat Drive, which is directly adjacent to the repair site,” city officials said.

Road closures

Sections of 33 Avenue Northwest between 76 Street Northwest and 87 Street Northwest will be closed. The right westbound lane of 16 Avenue Northwest near 43 Street Northwest will be closed in preparation for upcoming repairs to the main feeder line in that area. However, it was emphasized that this lane closure is a precautionary measure before actual repairs begin.

While the federal government announced on Thursday that it had stepped in to end the nationwide shutdown of the railway company, officials from the city of Calgary assured that there were no problems with supplies.

“We have an adequate supply of the chemicals we need to treat water, including a large inventory of chlorine and other essential materials. We have several contracts with chemical suppliers for our water treatment plants. In addition, we purchase the raw materials to manufacture our chlorine supply locally, which is produced in the province and delivered by truck.”

However, officials added that as a precautionary measure, they are actively monitoring supply levels and building up additional stocks if needed.

“Potential long-term impacts are being addressed as part of our Supply Chain Resilience Strategy. This includes working directly with our suppliers to ensure supplies. We do not expect the rail strike to cause any immediate disruption to us.”

Starting Monday, August 26, Stage 4 outdoor water use restrictions will once again be in effect in Airdrie, Calgary and other surrounding communities, meaning all outdoor watering is prohibited. While this means all outdoor watering is prohibited, residents are also being asked to voluntarily reduce indoor water use. This includes:

  • Limit your laundry to the bare essentials and full loads
  • Only run your dishwasher when it is full
  • Limit showering to three minutes and, if possible, avoid showering for a day.
  • Only rinse when absolutely necessary
