Summer heat returns to the Mid-Ohio Valley

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – The taste of fall we’ve enjoyed most of this week is now starting to fade. We’ll get one last taste this morning when temperatures start to hover between 7 and 10 degrees. After that, the sun will take full control and warm us up again this afternoon. Although our afternoon will be warmer, it will actually be close to average. The average high temperature for late August is around 30 degrees. Today’s high in the Mid-Ohio Valley will be around 28 degrees. With the air dry this afternoon as well, it won’t be hot and muggy. So enjoy the nice summer weather and maybe get to the pools before they close on Labor Day.

Over the next few days, high pressure will continue to dominate due to a stubborn ridge in our jet stream. This ridge will maintain a general area of high pressure and keep our entire region dry for the next few days. According to the latest drought monitor as of Thursday morning, much of the Mid-Ohio Valley is now in extreme drought. With no significant system expected near the region for some time, we expect drought conditions to worsen.

We’ve had high pressure for most of the region this week. At first, it helped bring about a northerly wind blowing through the region, bringing about unseasonably cool temperatures. Now that’s over. We had calm winds overall on Thursday, which brought our temperatures back up to just above 27 degrees. That will continue through Friday and into the weekend, allowing the sun to completely control our temperatures. On Saturday and Sunday, we’ll expect temperatures back up to just above 30 degrees. Thankfully, humidity won’t be an issue this weekend. However, by the start of next week, our dew point temperatures will climb back up to just above 15 degrees. By then, the heat index will climb back up to just above 35 degrees.
