Comment: Donald, lead the debate

There is no downside for Donald Trump when he debates Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC News next month. Trump made the right decision to appear at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago last week (Harris did not show due to a scheduling conflict), although he missed a chance to win over not just the audience but a broader spectrum of young blacks in particular when he questioned Harris’ race.

Harris says she will appear on ABC on Sept. 10, but Trump says his previous agreement was with President Biden and since Biden has dropped out of the race, that agreement is void. If Trump doesn’t show up, he’ll give Harris 90 minutes of free airtime. Given her inability to speak clearly without a teleprompter, that may be his strategy. Americans deserve better.

It should be less about their personalities and more about the country and our future. It’s not about race or gender, or crimes or moral failings of the candidates or their spouses. It’s about America and who is best able to lead the country back to economic prosperity, military strength, and global respect, especially among our enemies.

As an experienced debater, I would like to offer Trump some advice (assuming he is willing to take advice, which he usually is not).

Be positive. Use humor where appropriate. Have Harris defend her and Biden’s dismal record. Note how she has changed her position on every major issue except abortion and “climate change.” How can Americans trust someone who has no strong convictions? OK, Trump is vulnerable on that front too, but at least he has offered explanations for why he changed his mind, especially on abortion. What is her opinion on fracking and guns, for example?

Let Harris talk, like you did in your debate with Biden. Without a teleprompter, she’s as lost as someone in a strange city without GPS. The more her verbal and intellectual lapses are exposed, the better for Trump.

Demand that she lie about Biden’s mental state. Demand to know if she knew all along and covered it up along with other Democrats.

Demand that ABC and the rest of the media expose the real Harris instead of complicit in her fake transformation. Remember that her poll numbers have been terrible over the last month and there have been reports of employees leaving because she allegedly treated them poorly.

Wall Street Journal columnist Gerard Baker asked the right question: “Can the Democrats and the collaborative media succeed in transforming Vice President Kamala Harris from the verbally inept, politically inept, ruinous policy-advocating electoral faux pas we have seen for the past five years into the holy trinity of Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman and Margaret Thatcher we have been presented with for the past two weeks?”

Stick with the failed policies of the Biden-Harris administration and note that it has failed to keep its promises. Remind viewers of the cost of bread, eggs, milk, mortgage interest and gasoline four years ago and how high they are today. Promise to bring them back down by reducing the national debt and eliminating unnecessary government funds.

Quote Barack Obama saying this is not black or white America, this is the United States of America. Note that Bill Clinton balanced the federal budget, but his party was taken over by an extremist (Harris) who is to the left of Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts).

Trump can’t win the debate if he doesn’t show up. Be polite. Shake her hand. Tell the American people what you will do for America and remind voters what they (and Biden) have done to America.

You can thank me later.
