Grants available for repair/replacement of on-site sewer systems in Ellis County

Ellis County Environmental Department

The Ellis County Environmental Department recently received a $50,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Local Environmental Protection Program.

This grant will cover 85% of the repair/replacement costs for on-site sewer systems for households with incomes between 134% and 200% of the federal poverty level for 2023. This grant will also cover 100% of the repair/replacement costs for on-site sewer systems for households with incomes at or below 133% of the federal poverty level for 2023.

This program covers the cost of repairing or replacing defective sewer systems owned and operated by low-income households in Ellis County, Kansas.

Replacing these failing systems will protect the surface and groundwater resources that low-income communities depend on for clean drinking water.

This LEPP grant will be used to repair/replace defective on-site sewer systems.

The grant will help achieve the long-term goals, Bulletin 4-2: Minimum standards for the design and construction of on-site wastewater systemsincluding:

• Ensuring that the quality of surface and groundwater is protected for drinking, recreational, aquatic life, irrigation and industrial uses.
• Ensure that no breeding grounds or habitats are created for insects, rodents and other vectors that may later come into contact with food, people, pets or drinking water.

• Prevent wastewater from reaching the surface of the ground where it can come into contact with children and/or pets and pose a significant health hazard.
• State and federal laws and local regulations regarding water pollution and wastewater disposal are complied with.
• Annoyance or unpleasant smells and inconveniences are avoided.

The Ellis County Environmental Protection Agency acts as the sponsoring organization.

If you or someone you know may meet the above criteria, please contact the Environment Department to apply and discuss requirements.

Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds are carried over to subsequent years and can be increased annually as needed through the grant application process.
