New England Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is excited about what rookie quarterback Drake Maye has to offer, but it’s clear that the coaching staff views Jacoby Brissett as the current starter.

Brissett has played sparingly this preseason, and struggled in his last game against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 3 of 10 passes for 17 yards and an interception.

After this performance, some wondered why Maye was not used as often in the first team. Van Pelt had a simple answer to this question when speaking to media representatives on Thursday.

“Jacoby,” said Van Pelt.

Van Pelt added to his comments by explaining that Brissett’s familiarity with the offense as well as his ability to react in certain situations were important factors that gave him an advantage over Maye, as in Mark Daniels of MassLive.

There is still a feeling that the rookie is putting pressure on Brissett, and if that trend continues, his chance could come sooner rather than later.
