Northside residents hope for traffic lights to increase safety after council approves .5 million project

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. — Jacksonville’s north side may see road improvements next year after the Jacksonville City Council Finance Committee approved $1.5 million for infrastructure.

The money will benefit the Dinsmore area near Dunn Avenue and Braddock Road.

County Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr. said these projects are for traffic safety.

“Right now, people fear for their lives when they enter Dunn Avenue, where they have to turn left or right from Braddock Road,” Gaffney said.

On average, the area has had 41 accidents at the intersection over the past five to six years, Gaffney said. Now, work is underway to install a traffic light to prevent further accidents.

Residents like Lynette Thomas said they wanted to put something in the area that would make people slow down.

“It’s just getting so bad that we can barely get out of our driveway, and the speed limit in traffic is 45 miles an hour, but they’re only going 60 or 70,” Thomas said.

She said she has lived in the area for over 20 years and has witnessed several accidents.

“One of my neighbors four houses down had a fatal accident,” Thomas said. “They were hit from the mailbox. He walked past at the end. Two houses down to my right, two young people were hit, and about two or three months ago, a couple of young people ran into a tree.”

Gaffney said the council is in the midst of budget season but will take a final vote on next year’s budget in October.

Some of the money will also go to the Dinsmore Project, which will also help build sidewalks in the area.
