The 12-team College Football Playoff format will debut this fall, and for Penn State it means one step closer to the playoffs. But first up is West Virginia.
The Nittany Lions beat their local rivals 38-15 at home last year, but will travel to Morgantown this season to complete the home-and-away series. The teams, who haven’t played each other in more than 30 years, will begin their seasons against each other again.
It’s a big year for Penn State. Last year it went 11-2, losing only to Ohio State and Michigan, a feat some would consider high, but that wasn’t enough for the program. It’s chasing a playoff spot after never reaching the CFP in its short history. This year is the year it does it, with 12 teams moving into the playoffs under the new format.
The talent is there, but can the Nittany Lions beat the new and improved Big Ten? This year, they won’t face Michigan, but will instead play former Pac-12 heavyweights Washington, USC and UCLA.
The season opener away against the Mountaineers will be a test for Penn State, as West Virginia has a strong season ahead of it with strong returnees.
