The 3 South Wales restaurants named Britain’s best cheap restaurants by a Michelin chef

Three restaurants in South Wales have been named some of the best and cheapest places to eat in Britain by Michelin-starred chef Tommy Heaney.

Throughout 2024, Sky News has asked Michelin-starred chefs and top bloggers to choose their favourite budget-friendly dishes – a meal for two for under £40 – in their part of the UK.

Tommy Heaney is head chef at Heaneys restaurant in Cardiff and he has picked out three must-visit restaurants if you’re looking for a cheap meal in the South Wales region.

The 3 South Wales restaurants that are among the UK’s best and best value restaurants

Tokyo Nights

Heaney said: “I like what they are doing with Cardiff Market. We have been calling for a permanent street food market for years!”

“My favorite place is Tokyo Nights. They have homemade gyoza and a hearty tonkatsu sando.”

Visitors to Tokyo Nights echo Heaney’s high praise; the restaurant boasts 4.5 stars (out of 5) on Google Reviews (from 22 reviews).

One person who gave the Cardiff restaurant 5 stars for food service and atmosphere said: “Quality food at reasonable prices. You’d have to pay twice as much at a place like Wagamama’s or Yo! Sushi.”

Bab House

Heaney explained his choice as follows: “Another great place to be found in Newport, Barry and now Caerphilly.”

“Leyli is one of the hardest working cooks I know, but more importantly, she makes a fantastic taco.”

Bab Haus also received high praise from visitors in the Google reviews with 4.7 stars (out of 43 reviews).

One guest described his experience as follows: “Simply incredible food. Some of the best BBQ I’ve had in the UK, incredible bacon cheeseburgers and the most amazing sides. The corn ribs and mac & cheese are a must order.”

Beale’s Fish and Chips in Porthcawl

For his third restaurant, Heaney chose Beales Fish and Chips, saying: “It’s about 20 minutes from my house. Drive to the beach and stuff yourself in the back of the van.”

Beales Fish and Chips was also well received by visitors, receiving a rating of 4.5 (out of 5) on TripAdvisor.
