2024 Dutch Grand Prix – Results of the 3rd Free Practice F1 (Zandvoort)

Here are the results of a shortened third practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix, where Logan Sargeant escaped a serious accident.

A red flag during practice three at Zandvoort resulted in the drivers almost losing their final preparatory track time before qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix.

Pierre Gasly sets the fastest time in training for the Dutch Grand Prix under red flag

As it rained again before the third and final practice session in Zandvoort, the first 15 minutes on track were fairly quiet.

During that quarter of an hour, there were several slips, with both Haas’ Nico Hülkenberg and Kevin Magnussen blocking and sliding. While Magnussen escaped without a collision, Hülkenberg’s bizarre blocking caused him to slide nose-first into the barriers, damaging his car.

He managed to free himself and returned to the pits, but has since been cited for driving around the track with a damaged car.

Oscar Piastri also came off the track and landed in the gravel at Turn 1. But the McLaren driver also got away with his accident unscathed – the same was not true for Logan Sargeant of Williams.

The American driver left a wheel on the grass when leaving the Hugenholtz circuit and lost control of his car at high speed. It spun sideways into the barriers and his destroyed car caught fire. He had to get out quickly as the session was stopped with the red flag.

Although Sargeant was unhurt, the damage to the barriers led to a lengthy stoppage as race officials carried out repairs. The clock kept ticking and the session did not restart until two minutes from the end – leading to a flurry of activity as cars tried to complete another lap or two at the end.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was finally noticed by the race stewards when, in this melee, he dipped a wheel over the pit lane exit line as he overtook two cars on their way out of the pit lane in his haste to complete one more lap before the chequered flag.

Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez did not make it to the finish line in time and therefore could not set a time.

In the hectic hustle and bustle, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly ended up setting the fastest, albeit unrepresentative, time, ahead of Magnussen and Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas.
