Premier League all-time top scorers: Where does Erling Haaland rank on the list of most goals scored?

Erling Haaland won the Premier League Golden Shoes for the second year in a row after scoring his decisive brace in City’s crucial 2-0 win over Tottenham in the penultimate game of the season, taking his tally to 27 goals in the 2023/24 season.

Despite failing to get on the scoresheet in the final game of the season, when City beat West Ham 3-1 to win their fourth consecutive title, he still made a good start in England.

Haaland’s tally of 36 goals in the 2022/23 season broke the Premier League’s single-season record. He also became the fastest player to reach 50 goals in the competition’s history, needing just 48 games to do so.

His hat-trick against Ipswich Town on 24 August was his seventh hat-trick in two seasons in England’s top flight, putting him more than halfway to the record of 12 hat-tricks set by City’s predecessor Sergio Aguero and level with Wayne Rooney.

The question is whether any record is safe with Haaland. The Sporting News takes a look at the Premier League’s all-time list and how many more goals Haaland would need to break it.

List of all-time top scorers in the Premier League

The record for most goals in the Premier League is Alan Shearerwho scored 260 points in this competition for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

In total, the former English striker scored 283 goals in the top division: he scored 23 times for Southampton in the old First Division before the Premier League was founded in 1992.

The following list was updated as of Saturday, August 24, 2024 (active players are in bold).

Will Erling Haaland break the Premier League goalscoring record?

Haaland is there 67 goals in the Premier League overall, which puts him joint 76th in the all-time list along with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Michail Antonio.

Haaland’s only current teammate is Kevin De Bruyne with 69 goals, making him City’s fourth-highest Premier League goalscorer of all time, behind Aguero (184) and Raheem Sterling (91).

When it comes to being the best player in league history, Haaland has a lot of catching up to do on Shearer. After two brilliant spells at Blackburn and Newcastle, Shearer’s ability to take advantage of almost any kind of opportunity is something most would never dream of.

Haaland is under contract with City until June 2027. If he continues to score as many goals as he has so far and averages more than 30 goals per season over the entire period, he would slip into the top 20, but would be well below Shearer’s total of 260 goals.

However, Pep Guardiola’s attacking talent is only 24 years old. If he decides to dedicate the majority of his career to City and stays in Manchester for a decade, following in the footsteps of players like Aguero, De Bruyne and David Silva, Shearer’s record could be in danger.

That’s the challenge for any player who wants to dethrone the former England captain. Even if you score an incredible number of goals, you have to keep going for a remarkable length of time. Harry Kane is second on the all-time list and might have been very close before Bayern Munich came calling.
