Zayn Malik’s raw, country-inspired comeback after an eight-year absence from the music scene has thrilled his fans, but his new hairstyle has left them in deep despair.
The 31-year-old – known for his punk rock aesthetic – seems to have stuck to the same style for years, often with half-shaved hair and only the top of his head half-length. But while the artist is ushering in this new era of his career with his album Room under the stairshe takes on a new look – long and stocky.
In an Instagram post on August 23, Malik presented a new version of himself, causing great excitement among his followers because of his unusual appearance.
The former One Direction member shared a video of himself singing the acoustic version of “Shoot At Will” into a red microphone while wearing an unbuttoned cream collared shirt and matching jeans. While his outfit may have been put together, his hairstyle was something else entirely. Malik sported thick hair and a full beard.
Fans immediately stormed the comments section of his video, debating whether they liked his old hairstyle better. Stunned viewers admitted they were shocked that his hair grew so quickly.
“Show me the hair care routine because how the hell does your hair grow so fast,” wrote one baffled woman. In June, the English singer posted a selfie of himself with short, spiky hair that was nowhere near as long as in his recent Instagram video.
One satisfied supporter commented: “Your hair is just cute.”
“Damn beard,” said a third, while another called him “bear man.”
One Instagram user said the “vibe” suited him. “This caveman vibe. Zayn saves millions by not getting his hair cut,” he noted.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, a confused fan asked: “Does anyone know why he’s growing his hair out?”
“His hair and beard are so long,” wrote another X user.
Malik’s fashion taste is mostly dark and playful, experimenting with textures from mesh to fishnet to leather while staying true to a dark color palette.

“Everyone wore a certain type of pants or a certain type of shoe, and if you weren’t dressed that way, you would be questioned. People were very direct and gave you hell,” he told Cooper.
“The clothes you wanted to wear, the way you wanted to cut your hair – it was always like if you didn’t fit the norm, something was being questioned,” Malik continued.
