Help for motorists: Repair work on Lagos-Badagry Expressway to begin on Monday

According to the Lagos State Ministry of Transport, help is on the way for motorists on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as reconstruction work on the broken sections of the expressway will commence on Monday, August 26, 2024. As a result, motorists will be diverted to the Badagry-bound carriageway.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state Minister of Transport, who announced the government’s plans for the expressway in a statement on Friday, August 23, said the first phase of the reconstruction work, which includes the Durbar Junction towards Badagry section (both toll and service lanes), is expected to be completed by September 30.

Osiyemi therefore advised motorists to use alternative routes during the repair work on the first section. Motorists travelling from Lagos to Badagry on the toll lane will be diverted to the service lane which is 100 metres (depending on site conditions) from the planned repair site and are to exit the service lane and rejoin the toll lane 100 metres (depending on site conditions) from Durbar Junction to continue their journey.

Motorists travelling along the Service Lane from Lagos to Badagry will be diverted to the toll lane located 100 metres (subject to site conditions) from the planned repair site. To reach their desired destination, they will have to exit the toll lane back to the Service Lane 100 metres (subject to site conditions) from Durbar Junction.

Motorists travelling to Badagry from Durbar Road will be diverted to Fagbems Road towards Apple Junction to join Festac Road, after which they will head towards Alakija Road to join Lagos-Badagry Expressway to continue their journey.

The Commissioner asked for understanding, pointing out that motorists will have a through road on the other side of Badagry towards Lagos. He also assured that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on site to coordinate vehicular traffic along the axis, adding that after the completion of the first section, notifications will be issued for the other sections.

He called for patience, as the diversion is part of the traffic management plans of the State Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure for the renovation work on the asphalt surface of the road sections.

For the past four to six months, motorists on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway have been subjected to a daily dose of stress due to the collapse of a section of the expressway near Mile 2 station, causing traffic congestion that added over an hour to travel time on the expressway.

From Alaba Station on the Badagry-bound carriageway to Durbar Junction on the approach road to Festac First Gate, Amuwo Odofin, motorists are facing enormous traffic jams all along the route.
