Children have the opportunity to receive free school materials

For many in our area, the start of school is just around the corner and on Thursday, children who need school supplies can pick them up free of charge.

The Back to School Bash is hosted by the Wellpoint Care Network. Last year, thousands of families brought backpacks and school supplies for their children.

Please note: Students can pick up free school supplies before the new school year.

This year, the backpacks are already packed and waiting for eager students to take home. There will also be food, an information booth, haircuts and more.

Organizers told TMJ4’s Tom Durian that they were never surprised by the generosity of the Milwaukee community.

“I’ve been fundraising for about 30 years and I know how the Milwaukee community really steps in when needed,” said Starlet Hayes, vice president of Mission Advancement at Wellpoint. “Many donors have donated backpacks, funds and school supplies to us, and some things are still coming in.”

This year’s event starts at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and ends at 6:00 p.m. Just head to St. Margaret Mary School near 92nd Street and Capitol.
