7 credit card benefits, airport lounges and service changes coming soon

The credit card landscape is constantly evolving as banks and card issuers try to attract new business and keep existing customers happy. New bonus spending categories, sign-up offers and card perks are a constant, and that’s good news for travelers who like to be rewarded for their regular spending. These are some of the latest changes, perks and card upgrades worth considering for back-to-school shopping and end-of-summer travel.

Chase offers special lounges at the US Open

The Chase Lounge at the US Open is available to ticket holders attending the famous sporting event through September 8. During sessions 18 and 20-25, the lounge is not open. The air-conditioned space offers complimentary snacks and soft drinks, a bar, free gifts, a live ESPN broadcast and a happy hour once a day. Reservations are required, but there is also a waitlist in case there are no seats available. Another option is the outdoor Chase Terrace in the stands, which does not require a reservation and offers complimentary snacks or the bar for a fee.

The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card introduces quarterly bonus categories permanently

The Adaptive Accelerator benefit, part of the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card, is now a permanent benefit that earns cardholders bonus points each quarter. Cardholders earn double points in the top three of eight eligible spending categories each quarter. Categories include dining, flights booked directly with the airline, car rentals, local transit and commuting, gas, internet, cable and phone services, shipping, and social media and search engine advertising. There is no limit to the number of World of Hyatt points someone can earn.

Free checked baggage is available with Frontier Airlines credit card

The FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard from Barclays now includes two free checked bags for the cardholder on Frontier flights, a benefit that seemed to be missing compared to other airline credit cards. New cardholders also receive Gold Elite status in the loyalty program for 90 days, plus the option to keep it for a full year by spending $3,000 within the same period.

Bilt Rewards card cuts ties with Hawaiian Airlines

The Bilt Rewards card no longer offers point transfers to Hawaiian Airlines, although merger partner Alaska Airlines is still a partner. When the merger is complete, miles earned in both programs will likely be combined, so it’s not a huge loss unless someone wants to make an immediate redemption.

American Express is planning new Centurion Lounges

Salt Lake City is now on the list of airports getting a Centurion Lounge. The 16,000-seat lounge will open next year in the expanded Concourse B and will feature an outdoor terrace (similar to Delta’s Sky Club in the airport) with great views of the airfield and the Wasatch Mountains. The Blue Roast by American Express coffee bar will also serve locally roasted coffee, including cold brew and rotating seasonal beverages.

Capital One opens new lounge at New York JFK Airport

The largest Capital One lounge in its small but growing network of prime airport spaces will open in Terminal 4, although there is no specific opening date yet. It will be 13,000 square feet and will feature local artwork and glass sculptures. The menu will be inspired by New York flavors, drawing on local bakeries, bartenders, coffee roasters and cheese selected by a local cheesemonger. Capital One’s “Perfect Airport Beer” program will also feature craft beer from a regional brewery.

Credit One Bank Wander American Express adds travel benefits

This card is designed for people with average credit scores, making it easier to acquire without skimping on perks. It offers 10x points on hotels and rental cars booked through the card’s travel portal, 5x points on flights booked through the portal, as well as gas and restaurant purchases, and one point on everything else. Standard American Express benefits like rental car discounts, extended warranty coverage, and worldwide travel insurance are also associated with the card. Points can be redeemed (in increments of 1,000) for cash back rewards, gift cards, and other consumer goods and services.
