Storm-affected houses in Sheffield need urgent repairs

As a council meeting revealed, social housing damaged by winter storms needs urgent repairs.

The roofs of seven maisonettes in Haslam Crescent, Sheffield, were badly damaged by Storm Pia And Storm Jocelyn in December and January.

A report to Sheffield City Council’s finance and performance policy committee said the repairs were too urgent to be included in the 2024/2029 main roof replacement programme.

On Monday, the committee allocated £610,000 for more extensive roof repairs.

The report states that roofs have come loose from apartment blocks in Lowedges and that three of them required particularly urgent repairs in February. The Local Democracy Service reports.

The city’s maintenance staff made sure the damage was repaired, the report said, but the repairs could not wait until work on the roofs of 5,000 city buildings was completed.

It continues: “These roofs are in urgent need of repair and it is not considered feasible to repair these buildings under the main roof repair programme 2024-2029 due to the lack of a contractor available for at least six months and the risk of further damage during that period.”

The total budget for the entire city-wide roof refurbishment programme is £46.7 million, of which just over £3 million is to be spent in the current financial year 2024/25.
