Ohio Soccer loses to No. 8 Michigan State

East Lansing, Michigan. – The Ohio State football team (1-1-1) returned to play on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25), but fell 3-0 to No. 8 Michigan State (2-0-1) in East Lansing, Michigan.

Overall, Michigan State outscored Ohio 12-3 in shots on goal, with Ohio having six shots on goal to just two. Ohio’s goalie saved two shots while Michigan State had four corner kicks.

Individually, Jamison Brooker (Powell, Ohio) led with two shots on goal, followed by Scout Murray (Chicago, Illinois) with a shot on goal.

Online, Junior Celeste Sloma (Columbus, Ohio) started the game and played the full 90 minutes, allowing three goals and saving three.

Michigan State struck first when the Spartans’ Meg Hughes gave MSU an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute with an assist from Emerson Sargeant. After MSU continued to press, Hughes scored another goal in the 18th minute with assists from Bella Najera and Sofia Beerworth to give Michigan State a 2-0 lead.

Later in the first half, Sloma was able to parry a Michigan State shot into the left corner of the net, leaving the Bobcats 2-0 down at halftime.

At halftime, Michigan State had more shots on goal than Ohio (6-0), while the Bobcats were able to block one shot.

The Bobcats opened the second half with a save by Sloma in the bottom center of the net, keeping Michigan State at bay early in the second half. After Sloma’s goal kick, the Bobcats had their first try of the game when Brooker deflected the ball into the bottom center of the net that was saved by Michigan State. Moments later, Murray shot her own try that went just wide. A few minutes later, with the Bobcats showing better rhythm, Brooker again took a shot at goal in the top center of the net, but Michigan State was able to deflect the ball again and keep Ohio away from the goal for the rest of the half.

Ohio State and Michigan State battled for possession for the final ten minutes of the game, and neither team had any hope of scoring until the Spartans scored their third goal of the game in the 89th minute through Mackenzie Anthony, with an assist from Sargeant, to secure the 3-0 victory.

The Bobcats finally return to Athens to face Valparaiso on Sunday, September 1. First contact is at 1 p.m. at Chessa Field and can be seen on ESPN+.
