Tom Holland was given freedom to portray Nathan Drake

Tom Holland had “free rein” to create his own version of Nathan Drake in “Uncharted.”

The Spider-Man actor plays the thief in the new film based on the hit video game series of the same name, and was grateful to be able to put his own spin on the character and differentiate himself from Nolan North’s portrayal in the games.

Tom told ComicBook.com, “When we were developing this character and this movie, we were trying to figure out how I would play him.

“And at some point there was a discussion where they wanted me to just imitate Nolan North, and I started working on it a little bit, and I think we all came to the conclusion that we need to make this film unique.”

The 25-year-old star said he wanted to “pay respect to the games” while giving both the character and the story a fresh spin.

Tom said: “There had to be something new about it. So they gave me free rein to develop this character in my own way.”

The film serves as a prequel to the video game series, and Tom believes that the younger version of Drake is “more trustworthy” than when he becomes an experienced treasure hunter.

He said: “The difference is obviously that he is younger.

“I think one of his qualities is that he is very trustworthy, which he definitely shouldn’t be in the world of treasure hunting.

“He’s not very trustworthy in the games. But no, there are a lot of similarities, but also a lot of differences.”

Tom recently revealed that he almost lost his teeth because he wore Drake’s metal pendant during the film’s fight scenes.

He said: “We had to have one made out of rubber because it kept hitting my teeth during the fight scenes.”

“Honestly, it really hurt. I had to ask the prop master, ‘Can you make me one out of rubber?’ I turned around and hit someone in the face, and the ball bounced up and hit me right in the teeth. I’m glad I have teeth.”
