Used Land Rover proves that off-road driving can be affordable

A YouTuber bought a super cheap used Land Rover Discovery to see if you can buy a proper off-road vehicle without spending a fortune.

The answer, short and simplified, is: Yes.

Proof that good technology makes a car timeless.

A YouTuber nicknamed Lee Lockwood said he bought a Land Rover Discovery 2 TD “pretty cheaply” and spent a little more modifying the car.

After that, he decided to take a test drive and said that the car ran much better than expected.

In fact, he only needed help once, when he had to pull the car up a hill with the help of another Land Rover (and a winch).

One of the most robust Land Rover models ever

This is the Land Rover Discovery Series II, known internally as the L318, and it is the second generation of one of Land Rover’s best-sellers.

It was introduced in 1998 and remained in production for about six years.

It was available with three engines, two petrol-powered V8 engines and the legendary five-cylinder inline diesel engine.

The diesel engine sold significantly better than the other two, partly because the V8 engine was more expensive, but also because the diesel had more torque.

And that’s what Land Rover, both old and new models, are known for.

What are the automaker’s best-selling cars?

Before the Evoque, the Range Rover Sport was the best-selling Land Rover model year after year, followed by the Discovery and the Defender.

Then, over the last 15 years or so, things have changed a bit.

The Evoque was launched in 2011 and was an immediate success.

Meanwhile, production of the Defender was discontinued for the first time since 1947, but Land Rover (and its customers) couldn’t do without it and brought it back.

In 2019, just three years after the original Defender was discontinued, the automaker relaunched the model, this time with significantly more luxury.

Today, the car manufacturer produces seven vehicles.

There are two Discovery models – the “normal” and the sports variant, the Defender – as well as four Range Rover variants.

In addition to the large luxury SUV Range Rover, there is also the Range Rover Sport, the Velar and the Evoque, which the car manufacturer still markets as a Range Rover model and not as a standalone product.

And speaking of Range Rover models: There is a new model coming, the electric version, which seems to be selling like hotcakes.
