New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy made the announcement on Good Day New York earlier this month, saying the fare waiver was in response to the ongoing service disruptions commuters have faced throughout the summer.

Murphy says the holiday is “a way to express her sincere appreciation for customers’ continued loyalty and support,” especially at a time when “local transit has not always met their – or their own – expectations.”

Here’s everything you need to know about NJ Transit’s fare-free holiday week, including what’s included, what’s not included, and what happens if you’ve already purchased tickets.

From today through September 2, tickets are free on all NJ Transit trains, buses and light rail.

During the fare holiday, customers do not need to show or scan a ticket. However, from Tuesday 3 September, tickets will again be required for all journeys.

“We encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we remain grateful to the many New Jerseyans who rely on public transportation,” Murphy said.
