Patriots legends react to Mayes’ impressive preseason performance originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
New England Patriots fans were pretty excited after watching rookie quarterback Drake Maye lead an 11-play, 88-yard touchdown drive early in Sunday night’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
Three Patriots legends were also quite impressed.
Randy Moss and Julian Edelman both shared their opinions on Maye’s performance in posts on X:

Maye looks really relaxed out there 👀

Devin McCourty, who now works for NBC Sports, also liked the composure and poise Maye showed on that touchdown drive.
“The best part of that drive was that not everything went well,” McCourty said. “Fumble at the snap, a penalty, just a lot of different things. But Drake Maye was composed and had some really big throws. … Drake Maye put on some great performances.”
Maye completed five of six passes for 71 yards and a touchdown on that first drive. He also showed off his athleticism on a couple of nice runs, including a 17-yard pickup on a third-and-14 play.
If the competition for the Patriots’ starting quarterback job wasn’t already intense, it definitely got even more exciting Sunday night because of Mayes’ performance. He doesn’t look overwhelmed at all despite playing behind an offensive line that constantly commits penalties and has trouble snapping the ball.
It will be interesting to see which Patriots quarterback will be in the starting lineup ahead of his team’s Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 8th.
