Over 40 cats and dogs now live at the new facility. The animals were escorted by police from Humane Fort Wayne’s old location on Hanna Street to Leesburg Road.

Melissa Gibson, Humane Fort Wayne’s community relations manager, says the moment they brought the first dog into the new building meant the world to them.

“We are all very touched because we see the first little paw prints coming in here and we know that this is the starting signal and the beginning of a whole new chapter,” says Gibson.

She also tells us that they have been waiting for this moment for years.

“The reality is that our former shelter on Hanna Street was never really intended as a shelter, it was a converted building. So in reality we have worked for 50 years to have a facility that we own and that is tailored to our work and the needs of the animals. That’s fantastic,” says Gibson.

With the expansion, Humane Fort Wayne hopes to save even more animals.

“We have twice as much space for dogs and almost three times as much space for cats, so fingers crossed we can increase our number from about 2,000 adoptions a year to almost 5,000, saving 3,000 more lives a year in this building,” Gibson says.

Gibson also says they will take the rest of the week to get the animals acclimated to the new facility and give staff a chance to get familiar with everything.

The Leesburg Road location will officially open to the public on September 3rd.
