The city administration announced on Monday that repairs and repaving of roads with asphalt mixture will begin this week in Rancho Peñasquitos, Scripps Ranch, Torrey Highlands, Carmel Mountain Ranch and Fairbanks Ranch.

According to the city, asphalt sealcoating is used to prevent road deterioration, a key requirement for improving the overall condition of San Diego’s roads. It reduces the need for more costly resurfacing and rehabilitation of severely deteriorated roads.

Slurry seal work is often completed in phases over several days or weeks. Multiple slurry seal projects are performed simultaneously throughout the city and are often combined with other facility upgrades to increase safety and mobility for all modes of transportation.

The final work will be completed in August and September, weather permitting.

Roads that will be repaved include: Del Mar Heights Road, Carmel Mountain Road, San Dieguito Road, Camino Del Sur, Andorra Way, Camino Del Norte and Rotherham Avenue.

The city recently introduced two new road resurfacing methods – Cape Seal and Scrub Seal – which, similar to Slurry Seal, extend the life of roads by filling cracks, protecting against moisture ingress and minimizing the formation of potholes and other surface deformations.

The selection of roads for resurfacing is done through a pavement management system, which helps determine when roads should be resurfaced and what treatment should be applied. Each road section is assigned a Pavement Condition Index value based on the overall condition of the pavement.

Residents can view a map of past, current and future street repairs in their neighborhood on the city’s interactive StreetsSD map at streets.sandiego.gov.
